Understanding Gender Equality Respect, Roles and Equal Opportunities__ 01-10-2026(1)SARVAM conducted a special training programme for around 300 students across 15 villages, focusing on gender equality, respect for others, and an understanding of gender roles. The session encouraged students to reflect on how gender is perceived in everyday life and how social and cultural practices influence these perceptions.

The programme began with an interactive discussion on how people identify someone as a man or a woman. Students explored how clothing, hairstyles, physical appearance and other forms of expression can vary across societies and cultures. This helped introduce the distinction between biological sex and socially constructed gender. Through discussions and activities, students understood that physical differences between men and women are natural, while differences in dress, activities, skills, behaviour and other characteristics are often shaped by social and cultural practices.

The activities encouraged students to question assumptions and recognise the importance of treating everyone with equal respect and dignity.

The students were also encouraged to identify situations in their everyday lives where gender discrimination may occur. They shared experiences such as girls being expected to take responsibility for household work, boys being discouraged from crying or expressing emotions, girls being told not to laugh loudly, and restrictions placed on where boys and girls can go or which activities they can Understanding Gender Equality Respect, Roles and Equal Opportunities__ 01-10-2026(3)participate in. They also reflected on how games, toys, seating arrangements, clothing and other social expectations can create gender-based divisions and limit individual choices.

The training concluded by focusing on practical ways of promoting equality in everyday life. Students were encouraged to approach gender equality with courage, consistency and determination. The session emphasised that meaningful social change can take time, and that individuals who continue to practise and promote equality despite questions or criticism can gradually influence others and contribute to a more respectful and inclusive society.
