From January 2 to 5, 2025, SARVAM’s inspiring women from rural villages participated in the 42nd Annual State Masters Athletic Championship held at the Madurai Police Ground. This remarkable event, organised by the Tamil Nadu Masters Athletic Association, celebrated fitness, inclusivity, and the enduring spirit of participants aged 40 to 100 from across 30 districts in Tamil Nadu.
Among the 2,000 participants, 43 women from SARVAM, aged 55 and above, competed in various track and field events. Despite being daily wage earners with no prior athletic training, their determination and dedication were awe-inspiring. Competing barefoot, they excelled in events like the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter races, hurdles, and other challenges, showcasing resilience and exceptional discipline.
The SARVAM team brought home an impressive 63 medals:
- 24 gold medals (1st place)
- 22 silver medals (2nd place)
- 17 bronze medals (3rd place)
Additionally, 12 participants secured first prizes across three different events, and even those who didn’t win medals provided tough competition.
The event drew praise from dignitaries, including Madurai’s Senior SP and Commissioner, for the exceptional efforts of these underprivileged women. SARVAM’s volunteers were commended for their support and for fostering discipline among the participants.
A special highlight of the championship was the medal and certificate distribution ceremony at Aravind Eye Hospital, where Dr. Natchiar, the Chairman, applauded the women’s achievements and encouraged them to aspire for greater heights in future competitions.
This year’s championship not only highlighted the importance of physical activity for the elderly but also showcased how community support can empower individuals to overcome challenges. SARVAM’s team left the event inspired and motivated, with dreams of continuing their journey of excellence in the coming years.
